Suratchana is 35 years old. She takes care, alone, of her two daughters. Ten years ago, her husband left after the birth of the youngest girl. Since her childhood, she had problems with her sight. When she was a little girl, she couldn’t see properly .Then, in her 4^th year at primary school; she couldn’t see enough to study. She just saw lights and shadows.
  สุรัชนา อายุ 35 ปี เธอเลี้ยงลูกสาวสองคนมาด้วยตัวเองมา ตั้งแต่ สิบปีมาแล้วที่สามีแก่ทิ้งเธอไว้กับลูกๆ และตั้งแต่ ลูกคนเล็กเกิด  สุรัชนามีปัญหาเกี่ยวกับสายตามาตั้งแต่เด็กๆ เธอมองไม่ค่อยจะเห็น และหลังจากอยู่ชั้น ป4 สายตาเธอมองแทบไม่เห็น และเห็นแค่รางๆ อย่างเช่นเงาและแสงสว่าง และในระยะนั้น มันเป็นการยากมากที่จะรักษาตา และตอนเราพบเธอครั้งแรก ในปี คศ 2009 เพื่อส่งลูกสาวของเธอคนโตเรียนหนังสือ เห็นเธอนั่งอยู่ตลอดเวลา และจะมีคนช่วยนำทางเธออยู่เมื่อจะย้ายไปที่ไหนต่อไหน

At that time in Thailand, she couldn’t get a treatment. When we met her for the first time in 2009, for the sponsorship of her oldest daughter, she had remained seated and she couldn’t move without the help of a third party.

In 2013, after a sponsorship for her second daughter was asked, her state questioned us. We knew she couldn’t work and that these three people were dependent on the grandparents. It was a completely penniless family.

This family was very reliable; she had an educational and moral code.

The grandparents have adopted Manita, at that time a baby, they looked after her while her biological mother has “forgotten” to visit her! Manita is twenty today.

ในปี คศ 2013 ลูกสาวคนเล็กขอทุนการศึกษา พวกเราเห็นว่าอาการของเธอเกี่ยวกับสายตาทำให้เราเป็นห่วงมาก เพราะเรารู้ว่าเธอจะไม่มีโอกาศได้งานทำ และพวกเราเห็นว่าเธอและครอบครัวอยู่ในความดูแลเลี้ยงดูจากพ่อแม่ และมันทำให้นพ่อแม่ของเธอต้องลำบากมากขึ้น ครอบครัวนี้เป็นเป็นครอบครัวที่ขยั้นและเอาจริงเอาจัง ทั่งเรื่องการศึกษาหรือเรื่องความวางตัว พ่อแม่ของเธอเป็นคนที่เอาเด็กชื่อว่า มานิตามาเลี้ยงตั้งแต่เป็นเด็กทารก ตอนแรกก็เป็นแม่เลี้ยง แต่แม่ผู้ให้บังเกิดของเด็ก ปล่อยเด็กทิ้งและหนี้ไป จนตอนนี้ มานิตาอายุได้ 20 ปีแล้ว

We have asked Suratchana to give us more information on her sight problems. Medical treatment is so expensive for poor families that they accept that fact as a fatality. We ask her with the help of Kou Modt, our correspondent and teacher at the school, to undertake medical examinations that will be paid by our organization. Suratchana started with Ban Mi hospital which was the nearest, situated in the sub-prefecture, ten kilometers away. They weren’t competent enough to help her. Same thing at the hospital of Lopburi, the prefecture and finally at Saraburi.
พวกเราถามรายระเอีอดเกี่ยวกับปัญหาเรื่องสายตาของสุรัชนา การรักษานั้นไม่ต้องพูดถึงเพราะครอบครัวที่ยากจนอย่างนี้ไม่มีทางที่จะไปรักษาตัวได้ พวกเราจึงขอร้องให้ครูมด อาจรรย์ และผู้แทนของพวกเรา เพื่อส่งไปตรวจสอบ และทางสมาคมจะเป็นผู้จ่ายค่าใช้จ่ายทั้งหมดเกี่ยวกับการตรวจรักษา โดยเริ่มทำการตรวจที่โรงพยาบาล บ้านหมี่ ซึ่งอยู่ 10 กมจากบ้านซึ่งอยู่ในตัวอำเภอ แต่ไม่ได้ผลหมอทำไม่ได้ เลยไปตรวจที่โรงพยาบาลในจังหวัดลพบุรี และสระบุรี่ แต่ได้ไม่ได้ผล

The only thing left to do was going to Bangkok hospitals. Her visits there were quite an adventure .Blind in the rice fields; her only point of reference was birds and cocks songs. Here she was, in the capital city with the pollution and the noise of the traffic! First city in the world for traffic (any kind of vehicules). Her mother, a very smart woman went with her. I can imagine Suratchana, shrinking in a chair in front of the “big doctors”. They are able to find what her problem is but no cure is possible at the moment. We ask her to remain aware.
จึงหวังว่าจะได้ไปปรึกษาที่โรงพยาบาลในกรุงเทพฯ  การพบหมอครั้งแรกรู้สึกว่าจะมีความหวังบ้าง การมารักษาตัวที่กรุงเทพฯ ในฐานะของผู้หญิงบ้านนอกท้องนามันไม่ใช่ของง่ายนัก เพราะการเคยอยู่ในท้องนาที่มีแต่เสียงของนก และไก่ขัน จุ่ๆก็มาอยู่ในเมืองหลวง ที่มีแต่ฝุ่นและกลิ่นควันท่อไอเสียของรถ พร้อมด้วย เสียงรถยนต์เต็มไปหมด  เธอต้องเดินทางไปกับคุณแม่ ที่พอจะมีความรู้และผสพการพอสมควร และรู้จักอะไรในชีวิตดี ฉันก็พอจะมีความจินตนาการไว้ว่า สุรัชนานั่ง บนโซร์ฝา ต่อหน้าศาสตราจารย์ ผู้เชี่ยวชาญ อย่างสงบเสงียมเจียมตัว ท่านบอกว่าพอจะมีการแก้ปัญหาได้ แต่ก็ยังไม่ได้ตัดสินใจทำอะไรไปในระยะแรก และบอกให้รอไปก่อนเผื่อว่าจะมีวิธีที่รักษาที่ดีกว่านี้ 

Three years later, hope is back! Something is happening in the big city!

Medical technology has evolved. Travels-examinations in Bangkok going there by train, painful and long and dangerous among the rushing crowd!

Finally she will be driven there by neighbors. Now she goes to an eye specialist:2500 B ( 70 euros)per visit for 20 minutes .At that time, a month salary is 200 euros.
3 ปีหลังจากนั้น ความหวังก็รู้ศึกจะค่อยๆมีแสงสว่างขึ้น  มันมีการรักษาใหม่ๆเข้ามาสู่ประเทศ หลายอย่าง รวมทั้งการรักษาทางแพทย์ แฝนใหม่ การเข้าไปตรวจที่กรุงเพทฯโดยทางรถไฟมันใช้เวลา มาก และเป็นที่ลำบากต่อคนตาบอดที่เดินทางร่วมกับผู้โดยสารอื่นๆ ซึ้งมันอาจจะเกิดอุปติเหตุได้ และผลสุดท้าย ทางครอบครัวของเธอหาคนแถวๆบ้านเพื่อเป็นคนนำพาไปทุกๆครั้งที่หมอนัด โดยจ่ายค่าน้ำมันรถและค่าเสียเวลานิดหน่อย  และค่านัดพบหมอแต่ละครั้งตก ราคา 2500 บาท ต่อ20 นาที ซึ่งประมาณ 70 ยุโรในขณะที่ เงินเดือนขั้นต่ำในระยะนั้น ประมาณเดือนละ 200 ยุโร 

She goes there a lot, the professor is not always available, time goes by…

Then she has an operation on her left eye for a start. Result: she can see and recovers 70% of her sight. Unfortunately, she had an infection of the prosthesis and she’ll have to undergo expensive treatment during 18 months. She’ll have to bear the suffering, blood pressure in her eyes. We must wait, wait…We pay for all the bills.
ต้องใช้เวลาไปพบหมอหลายๆครั้ง และหมอไม่ค่อยจะว่างด้วย เวลาผ่านไป ถึงเวลาที่จะผ่านตัดดวงตาข้างซ้าย ในระยะแรก และผลที่ได้คือ เธอสามารถมองเห็นได้ 70 เปอร์เซ็นต์ แต่โชคร้ายไปหน่อยคือ ดวงตาเกิดมีการอักเศสและแพ้ยา และต้องใช้เวลารักษาเป็นเวลา 18 เดือน ค่ารักษาแพงมาก และเธอต้องทนเจ็บ เพราะมีแรงดันสูงในดวงตาอีก และต้องรอ และรออีก ในระหว่างที่รักษา ให้ดวงตาอยู่ในระดับเดิม และทางสมาคมเป็นคนจ่ายค่ารักษามาอยู่เรื่อยๆ

Then, this year, at the beginning of March, we meet her before leaving the village. Suratchana tells us her last analysis  are good, that she is ready and is waiting for the Thai Red Cross agreement to pay for her second operation.
และในเดือน มีนาคม นี้ ในระหว่างที่พวกเราไปเยี่ยมเธอก่อนที่จะจากมะขามเฒ่า สุพัชนา ได้บอกพวกเราว่า การตรวจสอบทุกอย่างอยู่ในขั้นดี และเธอก็พร้อมแล้วสำหรับการผ่านตัดดวงตาด้านขวา แต่เธอก็ต้องรอว่าทาง สภากาชาติไทย อนุมัติในการใช้จ่ายค่าผ่าตัดครั้งนี้ก่อน 

We are ready and we are looking forward to  her being able to live on her own in a free way .We ask her questions about the Red Cross: she is waiting !You have to be patient and wait for 5 years to receive an agreement and a financial help of an amount of only 15.000 bahts( 395 euros).
สำหรับพวกเรานั้น พวกเราพร้อมแล้วที่จะให้เธอได้มีโอกาศมีชีวิตอย่างคนทั่วๆไป และเป็นอีสระ เราจึงถามรายระเอียดกว่ากับ สภากาชาติไทย เธอบอกว่าตอนนี้กำลังอยู่ในจำนวนรายชื่อของคนไข้ด่างๆที่รอ และจะต้องรออย่างน้อยๆ 5 ปี เพื่อจะได้ทราบว่าจะอนุมัติให้หรือเปล่า และหากได้ ทางสภาชาติไทยจะจ่ายให้ในการผ่าตัดครั้งนี้ 15.000 บาท ซึ่งประมาณ 395 ยุโร

We think about that for a few seconds. In five years will the Red Cross still be able to help with that military government? Five years to wait, she will be 40 years old, then. Will our organization be able to help her in five- year time? The hell with the Red Cross in this situation! It‘s now or never! She is in good health and ready to do it. We can afford it. Let’s do it! Moving scene, I was sitting, she came to thank me and she bent on her knees, folded hands as tradition dictates. To the friends of the Old Tamarind I dedicate this pathetic moment: I was alone to receive it but I want to share it with you.
พวกเราไม่ต้องเสียเวลาตัดสินใจเลย  เพราะ 5ปี ในการรอของเธอนั้น และยังไม่แน่ด้วยซ้ำไปว่าเธอจะได้รับงบนี้ หรือไม่ โดยเฉพาะประเทศที่มีการปกครองด้วยทหารอย่างนี้  และถึงตอนนี้ เธอจะมีอายุได้ 40 ปี  เรายังไม่ทราบเหมื่อน กันว่าทางสมาคมเพื่อนๆมะขามเฒ่ามีโอกาศที่จะได้มารอช่วยเหลือเธอได้อีกหรือเปล่าในระยะนั้น ทำไมจะต้องรอไปให้เสียเวลาไปล่ะ ถึงเวลาแล้ว หากเราไม่ช่วยตอนนี้ เราก็ไม่แน่ใจหรือเปล่าว่าอีก 5 ปี เธอยังจะมีสุขภาพดีที่จะทำการผ่าตัดตาอีกหรือเปล่า  พวกเราจึงบอกให้ทำการติดต่อหมอเพื่อไปผ่าตัดทันที และไม่ต้องรออีกแล้ว ......ภาพที่เห็นอยู่ต่อหน้าฉันในขณะนั้น  ฉันจะไม่สามารถที่ จะเอามาบัญยายให้ทุกๆคนฟังได้ แต่ฉันก็ขอ แบ่งภาพนี้ให้แก่ทุกๆคน คือ.... ตอนนั้นฉันนั่งอยู่ สุรัขนา เรียบเข้ามาคุกเข่าต่อหน้าฉัน และยกมือไหว้ทั่วหัวน้ำตาซึม พร้อมทั้งความยิ้นอย่างดีใจ เธอยกแขนมากอดฉันอย่างแนน และพึงพับเสียงสั่นๆว่าขอบคุณ ขอบคุณ มันเป็นภาพที่ฉันจะลืมไม่ได้ จึงขอเก็บมาฝากเพื่อนๆ มะขามเฒ่าทุกๆคน 

This second operation will cost approximately 2500 euros, if everything is ok… We are waiting for the date of the appointment. The last meal in Marolles, in October 2017, with its 195 guests had for motto    “Suratchana’s health”. The total benefit of that day is 7500 euros. We had never reached such a sum! Paying for the operation will have no consequences on the help given to the pupils because, as a piece of luck there will be loads of rice this year!

ค่าผ่าตัดครั้งนี้ ประมาณ 2500 ยุโร แต่จะยังไม่ร่วม ในกรณีย์ที่มีอาการแพ้ หรือมีปัญหาต่างๆที่อาจจะตามมาทีหลัง....  เมื่อปีที่ 2017 เราใด้จัดงานประจำปีจัดเลี้ยงอาหารไทยของสมาคม มีทั้งหมดผู้เข้ามาร่วมงาน 195 คน ในงานเราพูดถึงการช่วยเหลือ ในการผ่าตัดตาของ สุรัชนา และสุขภาพของเธอ และในวันนั้น เราได้รับเงินจากค่าอาหาร เงินขายของที่ระลึก และเงินบริจาก และเมื่อหักออกจากรายจ่ายแล้ว เหลือกำไรทั้งหมด 7500 ยุโร และเราไม่เคยได้รับรายได้เท่านี้มาก่อน... ฉนั้นในการเป็นค่าใช้จ่ายเรื่องผ่าตัดและค่ารักษาตา ในกรณีย์นี้ จึงไม่มีปัญหากับสมาคม... รวมทั้ง ปีนี้ เด็กๆ ที่มะขามเฒ่าโชคดี ที่ พ่อแม่มี งานทำ มีนาทำและข้าวปลาอุดมสมบูรณ์ และได้ผลดีมาก จึงจะไม่ต้องจ่ายค่าอาหารกลางวันในปีนี้เช่น เหมือนกับเมื่อสองปีที่แล้วๆมาอีก...

 พวกเราขอขอบคุณที่ทุกๆคนให้ความไว้วางใจในการตัดสินใจครั้งนี้  เหมือนกับสุภาสิตที่ว่า เราต่างคนต่างร่วมมือกันจะทำให้มีผลและประสิทธิภาพดีเลิด !
