After obscurity, hope is born....

On our first trip to Thailand, Guy and Montri told us about Chanitporn, a little girl who still didn’t have a sponsor. She lived with her mother, who is blind, and her older sister, Pornapat, already sponsored by members of the Association des Amis du Vieux Tamarin. We were touched by her story. Without hesitation, we agreed to sponsor this child. We had already been candidate sponsors for quite a while. Of course, we wanted to see how Chanitporn lived, so we went to meet the family with some friends from the association. Chanitporn, her mother, Miss Surachana PIMPA,  and sister live together with grandparents, aunts and cousins. There is a great deal of mutual help within this poor family.

นับว่าเป็นครั้งแรกที่พวกเราเดินทางไปเที่ยวเมืองไทย  กีย์ และ มนตรีบอกเล่าเรื่องของ เด็กหญิง ชนิภรณ์ คำพร ที่ยังไม่มีใครให้ทุนการศึกษา ที่อาศัยอยู่กับคุณแม่ (นาง สุรัชนา พิมพา)ที่ตาบอด และพี่สาวเธอ ที่ชื่อว่า พรนภัส คำพร ที่มีคนรับไว้อุปถัมถ์จาก สมาคม เพื่อนๆมะขามเฒ่าแล้ว พวกเราฟังเรื่องที่เล่ามาแล้ว ต่างก็มีความสงสารมาก พวกเราจึงสมัครรับเป็นพ่อแม่บุญธรรมเด็กโดยไม่ได้ ติดติตรองอะไรทั้งสิ้น เพราะถึงอย่างไร เมื่อก่อนหน้าที่จะเดินทางมาเที่ยว พวกเราพร้อมแล้วและสมัครที่จะรับส่งเด็กยากจนเรียนกับสมาคมนี้อยู่แล้ว แน่ละพวกเรายากจะไปเห็นสภาพการเป็นอยู่ของเด็กและครอบครัวด้วยสายตาของเราเอง เราไปพบกับครอบครัวนี้พร้อมๆกับเพื่อนของสมาคมที่เดินทางมาด้วยกัน  เราเห็น ว่าครอบครัวนี้อยู่ด้วยกันหลานๆคน เช่น ตา ยาย ป้า น้า และลูกๆหลานๆ และเราเห็นได้ว่าต่างคนต่างก็ช่วยเหลือกันเป็นอย่างดี และอยู่กันไปตามประสาของครอบครัวที่ยากจน

We met this woman surrounded by her little daughters. Our feelings were strong as we saw this mother, with her blank eyes, smile as we arrived. Chanitporn had her arms around her mother’s neck while her sister,  Pornapat, was sitting by her side. Sadly, the mother could not see or even distinguish her daughters. She could only sense their presence. It was very moving. Because of her blindness, this mother living on her own (the father left several years ago) cannot work to support her family. Her situation is precarious; she receives a small monthly pension based on her affliction. The sponsorship of these two girls is a very good thing, but it isn’t enough to enable them to flourish. They have to share daily activities with their mother, like all the other children.

พวกเราเห็นและทำความรู้จักกับ นาง สุรัชนาแม่เด็กและลูกสาวของเธอทั้งสอง ทำให้เราตื้นตันใจมาก ที่เห็นสายตาของผู้หญิงที่เป็นแม่ยังอยู่ในวัยยังสาว เธอมองมาทางเราด้วยสายตาว้างแว้ง พร้อมกับรอยยิ้ม ในขณะที่ลูกสาวทั้งสองนั้งกอดคอแม่อยู่อย่างหน้าสังสาร เสียดายที่เธอตาบอดมองเราไม่เห็น และแม้แต่ลูกเธอทั้งสองคนก็จำได้แต่เสียงเท่านั้น สามีของเธอทอดทิ้งไปและปล่อยลูกทั้งสองให้อยู่กับเธอตามลำพังมาหลายปีแล้ว เธอไม่สามารถจะทำงานได้  แต่ก็ได้รับค่าเลี้ยงดูจากรัฐบาล เดือนละ 500 บาท การส่งลูกของเธอเรียนทั้งสองคนนั้น มันเป็นประโชนย์มาก สำหรับเธอและครอบครัวถึงแม้ว่าจะไม่พอสำหรับเลี้ยงชีพประจำวันก็ตาม ฉนั้นทุกๆคนต่างก็ช่วยกันทำงานรวมทั้งเด็กๆด้วย

Deeply affected by this situation, Guy and Montri suggested that this woman go through various ophthalmological examinations in Lopburi and the surrounding district. This was in 2013. The Association des Amis du Vieux Tamarin financed the cost of the examinations, as well as the expense of travel by taxi for her and an accompanying family member. Unfortunately, the results of these medical examinations produced little hope. Glaucoma was diagnosed, for which there is no cure and so no operation was envisaged. Eye drops were prescribed to try to slow down the damage. Following these discouraging examinations, the mother resigned herself to learning Braille and to take a massage-training course in 2014 with an association for the blind in Bangkok. She took advantages of these trips to the capital to consult other ophthalmologists.

พวกเราต่างก็สงสารและเห็นใจในฐานะการเป็นอยู่ของครอบครัวนี้ คุณกีย์และ คุณมนตรีจึงตัดสินใจให้แม่เด็กไปตรวจสายตา ดูว่าพอจะมีการผ่านตัดหายบ้างหรือเปล่า  เธอก็ไปตรวจตาตามที่ต่างๆแถวๆ จัดหวัด ลพบุรี และใกล้เคียง ในปี คศ 2013 โดยสมาคม เพื่อนๆมะขามเฒ่ารับอาสาจะจัดการจ่ายค่าใช้จ่ายให้ การไปตรวจต้องใช้รถ เท็กซี่ และต้องมีคนพาไปด้วย ผลสุดท้าย หมอบอก ตาเธอเป็น ต้อหิน ไม่มีความหวังที่จะทำการผ่าตัดได้ หมอให้เพียงแค่ยาสำหรับหยอดตาแค่นั้น  ต่อมา สุรัชนาจึงสมัครไปเรียนเป็นหมอนวดกับสมาคมสอนคนตาบอด โดยที่ทางสมาคมคนตาบอดจัดสอนให้ฟรี่ เพื่อจะได้นำเอาไปประกอบอาชีพได้บ้าง และในระหว่างที่เธอไปเรียน ที่กรุงเทพๆ เธอจึงถือโอกาสไปหาแพรทย์เกี่ยวกับสายตาโดยเฉพาะที่โรงพยาบาล รามา

In early 2015, medical advances allowed for the birth of new hope. An initial consultation was scheduled at the RAMA Hospital in Bangkok in May 2015 and as a result of this examination, an operation was planned. Several appointments followed to prepare for the first step, a cataract operation on August 18, 2015. Thanks to the success of this operation, the patient could see more light than before. At this point, the association decided to react and undertake all the expenses (approximately 29,500 bahts).

ในตอนปี คศ 2015 การแพรย์ มีประสิทธิภาพดีขึ้น คุณหมอนัดให้ไปรักษาตาที่โรงพยาบาล รามา และความหวังก็เริ่มจะเห็นเป็นลางๆ หลังจากตรวจสอบดูแล้ว คุณ หมอทำการผ่านตัดเล็นตา ก่อนผ่าตัดต้องมีการรักษาภายในดวงตารวมทั้งยาล้างตาต่างๆ  และวันที่ 18/08/2015 การผ่าตัดเปลือกของเล็นตาสำเร็จขึ้นได้อย่างดี คนป่วยเริ่มจะเห็นแสงสว่างเป็นรางๆ ค่าทำการผ่านตัดทั้งหมด 29 500 บาท ที่สมาคมจ่ายให้เป็นค่าใช้จ่ายทั้งหมด

Treatment for the glaucoma remained. A new visit to the ophthalmologist, who proposed the implantation of replacement crystalline lenses in her eyes. This operation would enable her to recover 60% of her vision. The only problem remained the high cost of the operation (65,000 bahts), given that the lenses had to be ordered from the United States. Guy and Montri immediately shared the possibility of this new operation with the members of the association. They wanted to consult to see out if it was possible to pursue financial aid for these new medical expenses. The response was rapid. The Amis du Vieux Tamarin agreed to cover the cost of the glaucoma operation. The association sent 100,000 bahts to our representatives in Makhamtao to finance all the ophthalmological visits and the eye operation for this young mother. The operation took place in November. The results are very satisfactory and in the end she recovered 70% of her vision.

หลังจากนั้นก็มีการให้ยาแก้ต้อหิน หมอนัดไปพบใหม่ และบอกว่าถ้ามีการผ่าตัดและใส่เล็นในดวงตาจะมีความหวังที่จะเป็นประมาณ 60 % และการผ่าตัดจะต้องใช้เงินมาก คือประมาณ 65 000 บาท เพราะจะตั้งสั่งเล็นมาจากประเทศอเมริกา หลังจากรายงานผลให้ มนตรี และกีย์เสร็จ มนตรีและกีย์ นำไปปรึกษา สมาสิกของสมาคมเพื่อขอความเห็น ว่าจะช่วยเหลือต่อได้หรือเปล่า ผลที่สุดทุกๆคนตกลงช่วยเหลืออีก  มนตรี สั่งให้คุณครูมด ที่เป็นคนที่ทำรายงาน รายละเยีดดและติดตามผมในการผ่านตัดมาตลอด ให้อนุมัติใช้เงิน จำนวนนี้มาให้ช่วยในการผ่าตัดรักษาตา และไม่นานมานี้ การผ่าตัดก็ได้ผ่านไปได้อย่างดี และ ขณะนี้ ตาของคนป่วยสามารถมองเห็นแล้ว 70 %

This spirit of generosity shows the strength of the commitment of the Association des Amis du Vieux Tamarin, beginning with Guy and Montri, to the families of Makhamtao. Thanks to them, the lives of Surachana and her two daughters will change considerably.   

สมาคม ของเพื่อนๆมะขามเฒ่า และ มนตรีได้ให้ความร่วมมือในการช่วยเหลือครอบครัวนี้เป็นอย่างดี และจากความช่วยเหลือของเขา และนับว่าเป็นบุญกุศลของ ผู้หญิงตาบอกได้มองดูโลกได้ แน่ล่ะต่อจากนี้ไป สภาพการเป็นอยู่ของ สุรัชนา และลูกของเธอเปลียนไปอย่างไม่เคยคิดเคยฝันมาก่อน
